GK Knitting Help: Joining in round with an overlap

This may be a tricky part of the Tyche Hoodie pattern, so I will explain what we are doing step by step.

At this point we have a workpiece that is knitted flat. The first and the last 3 stitches are I-cord stitches. On the left side we have 7 placket stitches altogether (3 I-cord and 4 Stockinette), on the right side we have 8 (3 I-cord and 5 Stockinette) because we couldn’t join the I-cord to the placket backwards last time. This causes a distortion here, but we will address this in a minute:

Picture 1. The distortion

What we need to do now is to slide these 8 stitches from the right-side needle to a DPN and place them behind the left-hand needle:

Picture 2. Place DPN behind your left-hand needle

We are going to knit the stitches of the left-hand needle and the DPN together according to the following:

Step 1.

Knit the first 2 stitches from the nearside needle and the first stitch from the farside needle together (3 sts altogether) from the front loop.

What this step does is to curl the first I-cord stitch under, so your placket stitches will line up perfectly and there won’t be a twist in the stitches.

Picture 3. Knit 2 sts from nearside, 1 st from farside needle together from the front loop

Step 2.

Knit 1 stitch from the nearside and 1 stitch from the farside needles together from the front loop. Repeat this step 3 times, until there are 4 stitches left on your farside needle (the 3 I-cord stitches, and the last Stockinette stitch).

Picture 4. Knit 1 st from both needles together from the front loop

Step 3.

You have reached the point of the distortion shown above on Picture 1. (it is on the farside needle). Knit 1 stitch from the nearside needle and the next 2 stitches from the farside needle together (3 sts altogether) from the front loop to make the distortion disappear.

Step 4.

Now you have 1 Stockinette stitch left of the placket on the left-hand needle and 2 I-cord stitches on the farside needle. To even out the number of the placket stitches, you have to knit these 3 stitches together. So repeat Step 3: Knit 1 stitch from nearside needle and 2 stitches from farside needle together from the front loop.

Picture 5. Knit 1 st from nearside, 2 sts from farside needles together

And you are done with the placket! Place a marker here, since this will be your beginning of the round from now on.
