The Enchanted Forest Collection

The Enchanted Forest Collection is the very first collection by Gynka Knitwear, published in 2017. The collection contains baby and toddler accessories.

The Origins of the Name

Aurora

My very first design was a romper, Aurora, named after the main character of the “Sleeping Beauty”. Aurora happens to be the name of a Roman Goddess as well, she was the goddess of the dawn.

Aurora is a free pattern, written only in size 9-12 months and can be downloaded here.

Fauna, Fiona and Flora were the first three baby pixie hats I designed after Aurora so it was logical to name them after the three good fairies in the Sleeping Beauty (Fiona is called Merryweather in the original, English version of the tale, she is only called Fiona in the Hungarian version). It may or may not be a coincidence that two of the three are names of Roman goddesses as well :).

Fauna

Fauna is one of the fairy godmothers of Aurora in “Sleeping Beauty”. In the Roman mythology she was the goddess of fertility of woodlands, fields and flocks.

Resembling the woodlands, the Fauna Pixie Hat has a subtle lace stitch pattern forming leaves all over.

The pattern is written in 3 sizes: 0-6 months, 6-12 months and 12-24 months. All three sizes are included in the same download. To knit this pixie hat, you will need your 5mm (US8) needles (straight or circular), a crochet hook, two pompoms and of course your tapestry needles and scissors. You can use any yarn that meets gauge, which is 17 stitches * 22 rows in 10cm (4″) after blocking.

Fiona

Fiona is another fairy godmother for Princess Aurora.

The Fiona Pixie Hat is the easiest of all, with an all-over Double Moss stitch pattern, which is easy to memorize. Perfect project for beginner knitters who would like to expand their knitting skills a little by learning how to apply an I-cord (tutorials are included to help you).

The pattern is written in 5 sizes: 0-3, 3-6, 6-9, 9-12 and 12-24 months. All 5 sizes are included in the same download. You will need your 3,75mm (US5) needles (straight or circular) and a 3,25mm (US3) for applying the I-cord. The yarn recommendation is Garnstudio Drops Cotton Merino but you may work this with any yarn that meets the 22 stitches x 32 rows in 10cm (4″) gauge (after blocking, of course).

Flora

Flora is the third fairy godmothers of Princess Aurora in “Sleeping Beauty”. In the Roman mythology she was the goddess of flowers and spring.

To stay true to her name, the Flora Bonnet has a lace stitch pattern where the eyelet stitches resemble small flowers.

The pattern is written in 5 sizes: 0-3, 3-6, 6-9, 9-12 and12-24 months. All five sizes are included in the same download. To knit this pixie hat, you will need your 3,75mm (US5) needles (straight or circular), and of course your tapestry needles and scissors. The yarn recommended by the pattern is Garnstudio Drops Cotton Merino but you can use any yarn that meets gauge, which is 22 stitches * 32 rows in 10cm (4″) after blocking.

From here we change stories but the fairy-topic remains the same: let’s see what other fairies and Roman gods do we have in this collection!

Meet Titania (Shawl), Oberon (Sweater) and Puck (Pixie Hat)
Titania

Puck is a fairy, a servant to Oberon, who likes to play pranks.

The Puck Pixie Hat has a very easy textured stitch pattern.

Moth Pixie Hat

Moth (Mote) is a fairy in Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream.

An easy pattern with some textured stitch pattern. You can knit it as a beginner since it includes video tutorials for the “trickier” parts.

The pattern is written in 5 sizes: 0-3, 3-6, 6-9, 9-12 and 12-24 months. All five sizes are included in the same download. To knit this pixie hat, you will need your 4mm (US6) needles (straight or circular) for the body, 3,25mm (US3) for the applied I-cord and of course your tapestry needles and scissors. The yarn recommended by the pattern is Garnstudio Drops Lima but you can use any yarn that meets gauge, which is 21 stitches x 28 rows in 10cm (4″) after blocking.

Oberon Sweater

Oberon is the king of the fairies, who is married to Titania.

The pattern for the Oberon Sweater unfortunately has never made it to publication, there were only a few samples made which were used for the photo sessions and those samples were sold later on. The only reason it is mentioned in this collection because I got so many questions about it. So here is the honest answer: it doesn’t exists as a knitwear pattern 😦 .

Lysander

Lysander is a gentleman in the court of Athens in Shakespeare’s play.

The Lysander Shawl pattern was originally part of the Enchanted Forest Collection but it didn’t make it to the photo shoot that was organized for the collection so the photos were taken separately and finally it was included in the 2018 Collection, the GK Basics.

The pattern is written in 1 size but it can be adjustable. If you stop earlier, you will get smaller shawl, if knit further, you will get a larger shawl. Gauge is not crucial for this project but it will affect the final size.
